Matthew 6:19-21 (NLT)
19“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
As Christians, we believe that Earth is our temporary home. We believe that after this lifetime comes a life that will last forever. We believe that the decisions we make in this lifetime dictate whether we will spend that eternity in God’s heavenly paradise or not.
These verses remind us that not only is this lifetime temporary, but so are the things we chase after and acquire. Money, clothes, iPods, and popularity are all things of this lifetime and are meaningless for the next.
It’s not that it’s bad to have these things. But if we’re spending more time worrying about whether we have the nicest clothes and the coolest gadgets…if we’re more passionate about our own popularity…and we’re not pursuing an intimate relationship with Jesus, we’re in a bad place.
Take a few moments to reflect upon your life and your priorities. Are you spending time with God—storing up your heavenly treasures? Or are you spending all your energy on earthly treasures? Where might you make some changes?
If today’s devotion spoke to you in a particular way and you feel led to share your thoughts with others, please do so.
