Daniel 3:26-27 (NLT)
26Then Nebuchadnezzar came as close as he could to the door of the flaming furnace and shouted: “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!”
So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stepped out of the fire. 27Then the high officers, officials, governors, and advisers crowded around them and saw that the fire had not touched them. Not a hair on their heads was singed, and their clothing was not scorched. They didn’t even smell of smoke!
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego had been thrown into the blazing furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar for refusing to betray God by worshipping the king’s idol. The Bible says the king was so angry he had the furnace stoked to seven times its regular heat. It was so hot that the men throwing them in were instantly burned up. But God protected them. They were not harmed by the fire. In fact, the passage says they didn’t even smell smoky!
What a miracle! But it never would have happened had it not been for the faith of these three men. They could have taken the easy way out. They could have abandoned their beliefs—and God—and bowed to the idol. But God didn’t call them—or us—to take the easy way out. Doing so would have prevented God from performing this awesome display of power.
Have you ever backed down and taken the easy way out? We’ll never know how God may have been able to work through your faithfulness. If you could go back and redo it, what would you do differently? Pray for the wisdom and the strength to remain faithful should a similar situation come up in the future.
